What is brainwave entrainment?

Brainwave entrainment is the hypothesis that rhythmic sensory stimulation can influence the timing or frequency of neural activity.

Why audio is used

Auditory approaches include binaural beats and other rhythmic sound patterns. They are often marketed for focus, relaxation or cognitive performance.

What research says

The evidence depends on the stimulation method and outcome being measured. For binaural beats specifically, a 2023 PLOS ONE systematic review found inconsistent entrainment findings and substantial methodological heterogeneity.

What that means for consumers

It is reasonable to distinguish “this phenomenon is being studied” from “this commercial recording is proven to produce a promised benefit.” Those are different claims requiring different evidence.
